About

TOM ZLABINGER is an ethnomusicologist and a bass player who teaches music full-time at York College / CUNY. He is the founding director of both the York College Big Band and the York College Blue Notes. In the summers,  he runs a six-week program for high school musicians via CUNY's College Now Program. He is also the artistic director of the Jazz at the Chapel series at the Illinois Jacquet Performance Space.

Tom holds a BA in music from Grinnell College and a MA in jazz performance from Queens College / CUNY. He is currently finishing his PhD in ethnomusicology at the CUNY Graduate Center and his dissertation focuses on jazz and improvised music in Vienna, Austria.

In addition to his academic life, Tom performs frequently in New York. Over the years he has made music with such musicians as Glen Branca, Roy Campbell, Daniel Carter, Lukas Foss, Eddie Gale, Jason Hwang, Lukas Ligeti, Ras Moshe, Bern Nix, William Parker, and Federico Ughi. He has also performed internationally in Vienna, Austria with prominent Austrian musicians like Walter Malli, Fritz Novotny, the JazzWerkstatt Wien, Daniel Pabst, Wolfgang Reisinger, and U.S.-expatriate Marco Eneidi.
